Terry Schreiber

Featured in Eva Mekler’s The New Generation of Acting Teachers, Terry Schreiber has been teaching and directing for over 47 years. On Broadway he directed the Tony-nominated play K2, The Trip Back Down starring John Cullum, and Devour the Snow. Off-Broadway his directing credits include Desire Under the Elms at The Roundabout Theatre with Kathy Baker and Feedlot at Circle Repertory with Jeff Daniels.

Terry has directed at regional theatres around the country including The Guthrie Theatre, Syracuse Stage, Hartman Theatre Co., Pittsburgh Public Theatre, Buffalo Arena Stage (directing Celeste Holm and Betty Buckley), and George Street Playhouse. Internationally, Terry has directed numerous American plays in Japan and has taught at the French American Cinema Theatre in Paris. He has directed Yasmine B Rana’s” THE FALLEN and BLOOD SKY at the Studio, and the 2016 New York Innovative Theatre Award nominated production of Simon Stephens Harper Regan for which he is also nominated as Best Director.

Terry’s first book, Acting: Advanced Technique for the Actor, Director, & Teacher is in its third printing, and his Producing on a Short Shoelace is now available in E-book form and deals with his many years of producing and directing Off-Off Broadway.


Script Analysis with Terry Schreiber

Terry Schreiber brings 48 years of directing and teaching to this special summer Script Analysis workshop. Influenced by the work of Harold Clurman, Terry will give actors, directors and playwrights the steps to prepare a script and full production book. Concentration will be on the use of theme, spine, event metaphor, actions and behavior.

This combination workshop and observership allows a small, select group of emerging and mid-career directors to study with Terry Schreiber and observe him in action as he directs a full production. This immersive experience will give participants the opportunity to observe the entire rehearsal process with regular Q&A sessions, allowing participants to explore Terry’s work with the text, actors and design.

Scene Study w/ Terry Schreiber

Scenes are explored for clarity of events, individual objectives, beats and intentions. An emphasis is placed on character behavior, activities, inner monologue and emotional life. Exercises are used to help actors dive into a character’s physical and emotional life, increase relaxation and concentration, and open up the actor’s instrument and imagination.
