History of T. Schreiber Studio
Founded in 1969
The T. Schreiber Studio established in 1969, is recognized as one of the foremost professional theatre studios in New York City, devoted to the comprehensive training and development of actors in a supportive and collaborative environment.
The Studio’s ongoing classes are integrated into its annual season of productions, allowing the accomplished faculty to guide the growth of each artist from classroom to stage. The faculty of the Studio is composed of working professionals and established artists in theatre, film, and television, under the direction of Terry Schreiber and Peter Jensen.
Terry Schreiber started teaching classes twice a week to twelve actors in a converted loft on the Upper East Side of New York City. Enrollment increased and the group began mounting productions in what were the early beginnings of New York City’s Off-Off-Broadway movement and building its reputation of high-quality productions and performances. Since 1969, T. Schreiber Studio has been committed to the development of vital artists in theatre, film, and television.
Mission
Our mission is to support new voices in the theatre, foster actors at all stages of their development, and empower audiences to participate in the creation of new works.
The Trip Back Down
The Studio continued to grow, adding more faculty, more actors, and more plays and in the mid 70’s, drama critic Walter Kerr’s glowing review in The New York Times of Schreiber’s production of The Trip Back Down, brought the Studio much attention and packed houses. The Trip Back Down then moved to Broadway and John Cullum (Northern Exposure) was signed to do the lead.
The 80’s and 90’s
Throughout the 1980’s and into the 90’s, T. Schreiber Studio continued to produce good actors and good theatre, and the studio moved to East 4th Street, the burgeoning street of Off-Off Broadway. During that time, Terry Schreiber continued his own directing career with two more Broadway shows: Devour the Snow and K-2, and numerous regional theatre productions providing more casting opportunities for Studio actors.
Finding a home
In 1996 the Studio moved to a renovated multi-use space on the 7th floor of 151 West 26th Street in New York’s lively Chelsea neighborhood. In September of 2017, the studio moved its operations to the 10th floor of the same building. Classes and productions run continuously throughout the year.
